The River Falls U14 girls soccer team won the Woodbury Indoor Soccer
League by beating Woodbury 1-0 in a shoot out on Saturday afternoon.
The prior week River Falls beat Inver Grove Heights 5-2 to advance to
the championship game. Unfortunately due to family vacations and a
conflicting basketball tournament the U14 team was missing six of their
thirteen players, so they asked three girls from the U13 team to help
out. An indoor team has a goalie and seven other players. The games
were held at the Bielenberg Sports Complex in Woodbury.
The game was very physical from the start. River Falls had numerous
shots on goal, but the Woodbury keeper was having an awesome game.
After Woodbury committed a foul in the goalie box, Raisa Heath lined up
to take a penalty shot. Her shot was good and River Falls took a 1-0
lead at the 15 minute mark. Woodbury came back with 5 minutes left in
the half to tie the score at 1-1. Although both teams had chances to
score in the second half, the both teams' goalies were able to shut the
teams down. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, so the game was to be decided
with a three person shoot out. Raisa Heath was the first to shoot, but
Woodbury goalie defended the kick. Next it was Woodbury's chance, with
River Falls' Kailie Flynn tending the net. Their shot hit the goal post
and bounces out. Emily Gregg, who plays on the U13 team, took the next
shot, but again the Woodbury goalie defends the shot. Woodbury shoots,
but Flynn dives and is able to deflect the ball away. Flynn is the
last player to shoot for River Falls and it appears the game might be
decided by another three player shoot out, but Flynn puts one past the
Woodbury goalie. It comes down to Woodbury's last player and Flynn.
The Woodbury player shoots and Flynn stops the ball with her legs to
give River Falls the victory.
